Description
An Elevator Installer installs, repairers, and maintains elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and other lifts.
Typical Job Activities
Installs
and repairs elevator mechanics
Reads blueprints to determine the equipment needed for installation or repair
Installs or repairs elevator doors, cables, motors, and control systems
Locates malfunctions in brakes, motors, switches, and control systems
Connects electrical wiring to control panels and electric motors
Uses test equipment, such as ammeters and voltmeters, to diagnose problems
Adjusts counterweights, door mechanisms, and safety controls
Tests newly installed equipment to ensure that it meets specifications
Complies with safety regulations and building codes
Keeps service records of all maintenance and repair tasks

Entry to Work Place Apprenticeship Training:
If you want to become an elevator installer
you need to register with an employer providing suitable training.
Training
consists of theoretical and practical work:
Theoretical training: At a technical(FET) college or at the company's
registered in-service training centre.
Practical training: The practical training period is spent in the construction,
maintenance and repair sections of a company installing and maintaining lifts.
Duration of course: Between 80 and 208 weeks depending on the progress of the
apprentice.
Final examination: A compulsory trade test set by the Department of Labour to
qualify as an artisan.
Additional Requirements:
If you want to become an elevator installer
you must be at least 16 years old.
NOTE: Changes in the training of artisans are subject to the official approval
of the Registrar of Labour Training.
