All about the bursary application process

If you're serious about getting funding for your studies, start your research early in the year (Stocksnap.io)

So you're considering sending out a number of bursary applications? Fantastic! To help you with the process, we've collated a few essential tips.

If you’d like to apply for a bursary, but not sure how the process works or when you should start applying, take a look at our top tips to ensure you secure funding before applications close.

Research as many companies as possible

Ask friends and family, browse the internet and chat to teachers to find out which companies or organisations have bursary programmes that could be beneficial to you. Keep in mind that companies who provide large amounts of money are mostly looking for candidates with outstanding qualities and proof thereof – leadership or volunteer roles for example, might help your application.

Start applying early

If you’re applying for a bursary, lots of programmes open quite early in the year and candidates have to undergo a number of tests and possible interviews. Start researching very early in the year to ensure that you have enough time to prepare.

Perfect your letter of motivation

Many companies and organisations ask for a letter of motivation. This could be the equivalent of a cover letter for a bursary application. If you’re not sure what to include or if your spelling and grammar are not up to scratch, it’s best to get a tutor, teacher or family member to have a look at your application before you submit it.

Use these cover letter tips to help you with writing your motivational letter.

Get interview ready

Some bursary applications can get quite intricate. You could be asked to submit a motivational letter, prepare for a presentation and then a follow-up interview. Don’t be left unprepared – think of a few interview questions and how you would answer them to eliminate the element of surprise and those interview nerves.
