Description
An Otolaryngologist, often called an ENT doctor, specializes in the treatment of the ears, mouth, throat and nose. Beyond its focus on the respiratory system, otolaryngology includes the larynx, sinuses, and the structures of the face and neck. An otolaryngologist completes a residency program that includes coursework and training in the communication sciences, including speech-language pathology and audiology, and in disorders of the upper alimentary system that is critical to digestion and nutrition. The otolaryngologist’s duties depend, in part, on the type of practice and additional specialization.
Typical Job Activities
Specializes in the treatment of
ears, nose and throat
Treats the problem but they investigate about the root cause of the infection
if it is recurring
Investigates if the problem is occurring because of an allergy because allergic
problems keep recurring and normal medicines only provide temporary relief
Informs the patients of the precautions they have to take
Recommends surgery to the patients
Make charts about the history of all the patients so it they can be used for
reference
Writes the prescriptions for the medication and provide them directions on how
to take those medications
Build good relations with all their patients

Educational Requirements
Senior Certificate with matric exemption
University:
MBChB degree
- Theoretical training: 5 years
- Student internship: 1 year
- Practical work at a hospital: 1 year (also known as the house doctor year)
Post-graduate study
for specialization as an Otolaryngologist:
MMed or FCP (SA): 4 years
Additional
Requirements:
Before commencing post-graduate study for specialisation as an Otolaryngologist
the candidate must:
- be in possession of an MBChB degree for 2 years
- be registered as a medical doctor with the Interim Medical and Dental Council
(IMDC) of South Africa for 1 year
Registration:
On successful completion of the examination to qualify as specialist, the
candidate must register with the IMDC as an Otolaryngology
Compulsory subjects: Mathematics
and Physical Science
Recommended subjects: Biology
and Chemistry
