Description An Optometrist examines eyes for problems with vision, disease and other abnormal conditions.

Typical Job Activities

Tests people’s eyes for proper depth and colours perception and the ability to focus and co-ordinate the eyes
When required, prescribes, fits and adjusts glasses or contact lenses
Prescribes corrective eye exercises or other treatment not requiring drugs or surgery
When a disease is present, refers the patient to an ophthalmologist
Consults with educators on preventive vision care for school children, and with public officials and management to help eliminate vision hazards
Promotes eye hygiene and general eye safety, and also inform people about correct reading habits and lighting
