In-Service Training
A prospective auctioneer must undergo intensive in-service training as auction clerk and general assistant at an auction company who is registered with the South African Institute of Auctioneers.
Training is four to five years. In this process he adopts his own personal auction character and method of carrying out his multiple duties. He comes into direct contact with auctions and sellers and buyers and learns what factors motivate them to sell or buy.
The training is predominantly practical.
Some form of extra training regarding sales principles and public relations would be of great assistance.
The school-leaver interested in an auctioning career works as a clerk until he is regarded sufficiently advanced to become an auction clerk and auction assistant. He then acts as sales clerk for approximately two years, depending on his own characteristics, willingness to learn, initiative and behaviour. He also becomes acquainted with the legal aspects of selling and buying, which are important aspects of this career.
