Job Title – Road Resident Engineer

Description

A Road Resident Engineer is assigned to a road construction contract before bids are submitted; the Road Resident Engineer will review the contract drawings and specifications for discrepancies and for constructability. Input is provided to the Project Manager. The Road Resident Engineer will attend the pre-bid conference, if the position is staffed at that time. The Road Resident Engineer may be requested to accompany the Project Manager on a jobsite tour with prospective bidders. The Road Resident Engineer must maintain an impartial position and not offer opinions or similar comments that would provide an unfair advantage to one or more bidders.

The Road Resident Engineer inspects the work site to determine the progress of site preparation by others, if required, right-of-way acquisition, specific access restrictions, potential interfaces with the public, and the status of pre-construction damage surveys. Input is provided to the Project Manager.

Typical Job Activities

Works on project that focuses on the rehabilitation of provincial and national roads
Manages day-to-day supervision of the project and team
Works on rehabilitation of national routes
Works on reconstruction of road bridges. Widening of bridges and several new major culverts are also constructed
Services include detailed planning, tender designs, tender documentation, management of tendering process and the appointment of a contractor
Manages the finances of the project and supervision of the construction
Responsible for visual inspection of layer works and guardrails, inspection of base before priming, recording of as-built layers, calculation of quantities for payment certificates, overseeing of sidewalk construction and overseeing traffic accommodation
Measures and agrees to the quantities for payment
Responsible for monthly payment certificates
Responsible for monthly reports to client

Educational Requirements

Senior Certificate with matric exemption
University: BSc/BEng/BTech Degree in Civil Engineering
Technikon: PrEng or PrTech registered with The Engineering Council of South Africa
10 years’ experience as an Resident Engineer on road projects
Experience working on The South African National Roads Agency and Provincial roads departments

Compulsory subjects: Mathematics and Physical Science
Recommended subjects: Computer Studies, Technical Drawing and English
