Description
A Pneumatic Technician fabricates, assembles, services, maintains and tests pneumatic equipment. Can calculate force and motion control systems and is able to follow blueprints and schematics with ISO standard pneumatic symbols.
Typical Job Activities
Sets-up
and tests systems and components under direction of engineering and scientific
staff
Recommends modifications to circuit & components to improve performance
Provides leak free piping
Able to establish ISO 8573-1 cleanliness level
Can select equipment to provide and maintain ISO cleanliness level
Supervises system installation, flushing & commissioning
Uses instruments such as callipers and micrometres
Understands basic electrical controls and their application
Understands ladder logic
Reads electronic circuits
Able to size air compressor for application
Able to assist in compressed air audits
Does trouble shooting and supervises required replacements, repair or
adjustments

Entry to Work Place
Apprenticeship Training: If you want to become an instrument maker you need to register with an employer providing suitable training.
Training consists of theoretical and practical work:
- Theoretical training: At a technical (FET) college or a correspondence course
at Technisa.
- Practical training: In-service training under supervision
of a qualified tradesman.
- Duration of course: 5 years but it can be completed in a
shorter period provided that the candidate has higher educational
qualifications.
- Final examination: A compulsory trade test set by the
Department of Labour to qualify as an artisan.
