Job Title – Diagnostic Radiographer
Description
A Diagnostic Radiographer captures x-ray images of the human body on film or other media using sophisticated x-ray equipment.
Typical Job Activities
Assess patients and their clinical
requirements to work out which radiographic techniques to use
Performs a range of radiographic examinations on patients to produce
high-quality images
Takes responsibility for radiation safety in your work area, including checking
equipment for malfunctions and errors
Manages referrals to ensure patients receive a radiation dose as low as
reasonably possible
Supervises visiting staff and patients in radiation work areas
Helps in more complex radiological examinations, working with doctors such as
radiologists and surgeons
Provides support and reassurance to patients, taking into account their
physical and psychological needs
Supervises radiography and imaging support assistants
Keeps up to date with health and safety guidelines, including ionising
radiation regulations, to protect yourself and others

Senior Certificate
with matric exemption for a degree course in Radiology
Senior Certificate
for a diploma course in related fields
Completion of a two-year approved School of Radiologic Technology
Register: The student radiographer and qualified radiographer should register with the Interim National Medical and Dental Council of South Africa
