Robyn kicked off her career by doing an open water course through Into the Blue Scuba Dive Centre, her current employer. Completing the PADI Open Water Diver Course allowed Robyn to learn the fundamentals of scuba diving. “The scuba diving course is entry level in getting a dive license that allows you to diving up to 18 meters.” She’s since moved up the ranks from being a PADI Open Water Instructor to becoming a PADI Specialty Instructor, which means she is qualified to teach a broader range of specialty courses such as photography specialty, boat specialty, wreck specialty, and more.

Robyn says she knew that she wanted to be a scuba diver instructor from the time she did the course. “I immediately fell in love with the feeling and the experience of breathing underwater – it got me so hooked!

Scuba diver instructors are responsible for teaching scuba diving techniques to people interested in diving recreationally or for those who want to obtain a scuba certification. Their main responsibility is to demonstrate basic scuba skills, accompany divers under water and adapt to emergency situations so that students are prepared for the activity.

In addition to teaching scuba diving techniques, instructors need to interact with students and continually monitor their performance in order to provide suggestions and additional training as and when required.

I love showing new divers the amazing marine life that we have underwater. Nothing beats seeing a student with a broad smile after a dive. We make ocean ambassadors one dive at a time.

And because I love diving, it’s amazing to wake up every day knowing that I’ll be spending the day diving.”

We asked Robyn what advice she has for someone who would like to know how to become a scuba diver, and this is what she had to say: “Learning how to become a scuba diver instructor requires long hours and it is physically demanding – that’s why I think it’s ideal for youngsters who have a love for diving and have a real passion for the ocean. When you love what you do, it becomes easy to share it with others.
