Apart from being a radio broadcaster, Nonala is also a social entrepreneur - a role in which she uses her influence to improve the leadership skills of young children.
Nonala is a radio broadcaster for one of South Africa’s leading radio stations. She is also a social entrepreneur who was recently recognised as a rising star in the entrepreneur category at the 6th Annual Standard Bank Rising Star Awards. Nonala, passionately known as ‘Nala’, gave us a sneak peek into her job so we could learn more about her career in broadcasting, as well as her work in entrepreneurship.
Nonala’s passion for leadership led her to pursue a career in which she could use her influence and dynamism to lead communities through broadcasting platforms. Nonala graduated from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Social Sciences. Her break in radio broadcasting came in 2009 when she joined YFM’s Y-Academy, a youth radio station, on a 6-month broadcasting internship. Over a period of 8 years, Nonala has held numerous positions in radio presenting, copywriting and production.
In 2016, she joined 5FM’s Fresh@5breakfast team as a traffic reporter, a role in which she brought a vibrant energy and lots of lifestyle scoop.
A radio broadcaster is the public face or voice of programmes broadcasted on radio. They work on numerous platforms, which can be aired nationally, regionally or online.
A broadcaster presenter’s job is to entertain and inform listens by presenting information or entertainment in an accessible and entertaining way. They need to introduce, host a programme, introduce and interview studio guests, as well as interact with listeners. In addition, they need to learn how to operate some technical equipment for recording and playback, using computers to cue up and play music.
We asked Nonala what she loves most about her career, and she had this to say: “I love to see someone discover a side of them that has been lying dormant.”
She adds that being able to tap into a person’s subconscious gives her the motivation to keep going. “Helping to uproot self-sabotaging thoughts and feelings is rewarding, especially when you get to see someone step out with a positive mindset and ready to conquer and face their fears.”
Her advice for people who aspire to follow in her footsteps: “Write down all your thoughts especially those that come in the middle of the night, sink your mind into leadership material regularly and have a personal relationship with God.”
For those who would like to hold positions of leadership, she emphasises the importance of self-awareness. “Be aware of yourself first because those you train will only be as good as the ‘leadership lid’ above you.”
