Dalin tells us that he never planned to pursue a career in comedy. In fact, it was procrastination that led the former history and maths teacher into comedy. “I was bored during my third year of my politics final exams,” Dalin explains.

I have UCT’s ‘exciting theory-driven courses to thank’,” he says sarcastically.

In his boredom, he decided to jot down a few funny thoughts. “To this day I’m still not sure why I did it.” He continues: “It was an ‘epiphany’, and the next day, I decided to tell my friends about it.”

Thereafter, Dalin did his homework and found out more about the South African stand-up comedy scene in pursuit of his first gig. “After numerous emails, Facebook and Twitter messages, I was given my first opening spot at the Jokers Comedy Club in Athlone.”

After scoring his first gig, Dalin became a regular opening act for many of South Africa’s well-known stand-up comedians, including Riaad Moosa and Barry Hilton.

I love being on stage,” he says.

I honestly cannot stress how much I love performing; it’s my happy place. I have the opportunity to pursue my passion by using humour as a vehicle. Making people laugh and laughing at yourself is such an awesome gift,” Dalin explains.

I get to interact and perform for people from all walks of life. Finding a common thread that they can relate to and laugh at is something extremely special.”

He adds that he loves the fact that in the process, he is figuring out the beautiful art of stand-up comedy one performance at a time.

We asked Dalin to share his advice for people who would like to know how to become a comedian. “In my personal opinion… Stage time! Stage time! Stage time! That’s the only way to improve your craft,” he emphasizes, adding that, “self-discovery and growth happen on stage.

Your ‘funny’ and comedy identity develop on the stage and that’s when you slowly and surely learn how to deliver and set-up a punchline, structure your set as well as read and interact with audience members.”
