Makro, together with the Tomorrow Trust, afforded 28 Grade 11 and Matric learners the opportunity to visit Makro Riversands on 30 May 2019 as part of the retailer’s annual Take a Child to Work Day programme.

The day focused on exposing the learners to the breadth of opportunities available within the retail environment including Human Resources, Commercial, Marketing, Online, Fulfillment, Receiving, Stock Control, Accounts and Food.

A Grade 11 learner Nobuhle Maduna from Dr Beyers Naude Secondary School said, “Today I learnt a lot, I was most excited to learn more about the role of IT.”

“I am grateful for this opportunity that I have been given. I am now aware of what retailing is all about and how vast it is”, said Nobuntu Mofokeng, a Grade 11 learner from Orlando West Secondary School.

Kwadedangendlale Secondary School Grade 11 learner Akhona Dubazana said, “The day has helped me to see that in one place you can find different types of careers, which means I can get a job in different departments as long as I have a qualification.”

The Tomorrow Trust is a non-profit organisation founded in 2005, which hosts Saturday and holiday schools to equip learners from disadvantaged communities with extra tutorials to assist them in obtaining stronger results.

Taryn Rae, the Business Development Manager for the Tomorrow Trust, said - “Often Children from vulnerable backgrounds are brought up not understanding or seeing the sort of careers that are available, especially in the retail space. “What was also so profound was how excited and passionate each staff member is about working at Makro. Thank you for having us at Makro Riversands and showing us how BIG ON LIFE Makro truly is.”

Makro is BIG in its support for education-enabling initiatives. This is best expressed through the business’s new education programme, M Equals Educate (M=educ8). M=educ8 allows parents to support a school of their choice by simply downloading the mCard app and then signing up to the M=educ8 programme. Once signed up, parents are able to earn R5 for their institution of choice for every R1000 spent and still earn themselves cash back through mRewards.

“We are extremely passionate about education and the opportunity to trickle down knowledge and skills to the youth”, said Farzana Sonvadi, the Makro Corporate Affairs Manager.

Makro is Big on Life!
