On 27 March, all eyes will be on Cornubia in KwaZulu-Natal as Makro’s newest store opens its doors. For the queues of excited shoppers in search of savings, the deals will be great.

But already significant savings have begun in long-term water and power efficiency. Each new Makro warehouse is built to be green from the ground up. Makro Cornubia, which is 19 100m2 in size and sits on 6.13 hectares, boasts the chain’s most impressive eco resume yet.

Customers will feel the warmth beneath their feet when they stroll in between Makro Cornubia’s upright chillers. This is thanks to the store’s state-of-the-art refrigeration system, which will be warming the floors and keeping things comfortable for shoppers. Every refrigeration unit uses carbon dioxide, which is 100% natural and has zero ozone-depleting and global-warming potential ratings. Each unit also features excellent insulation and high-speed doors to keep products cool using less energy.

Besides chilling the food, Makro Cornubia’s refrigeration system also produces condensate water, which is harvested and reused elsewhere on the premises. Metered taps and dual flushing systems in all of the store’s bathrooms, meanwhile, reduce consumption so that municipal water usage can be kept to a minimum.

A hi-tech thermal storage system produces chilled water for the store’s air-conditioner and helps keep customers chilled. Makro Cornubia reduces power wastage through several interventions, such as making use of motion sensors in offices and storage areas that shut down lights when staff members step out. All lighting is 100% LED at the store, plus there are an additional 250 skylights that add brightness from above during the day.

Outside the store in the parking area, Makro also has savings in mind. The store’s solar port parking shades keep cars cool while generating electricity for the store to use. With reliable power being such a crucial topic in South Africa at the moment, now more than ever Makro Cornubia aims to lower its power usage while upping its commitment to the planet.

When it comes to people, 54% of all local candidates interviewed for various posts were successful. Besides jobs, the store will also be running development programmes aimed at encouraging sustainable employability for youngsters in the future. Like all Makro stores, Makro Cornubia will also focus its corporate social investment efforts on supporting local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres including crèches and child caregivers, who look after young learners during these crucial early years.
