If you’re like the most of us who suffer from the 3pm crash, here's how to stay productive for longer.
After 3pm, you’re counting the minutes to clock out time. You’re finding it hard to concentrate. You don’t feel to finish your duties. You're easily distracted. You take more frequent bathroom breaks. And bed, pillows and nap are at the top of your ‘if I was Aladdin’ list.
We have all been there. Being able to keep going when all the other non-Energizer Bunnies have fallen, will set you apart and well on your way to coveted recognition, a promotion or a little something extra (maybe like money) at the end of the month.
If you’re like most of those who suffer from the 3pm crash, try these helpful slump-busters and learn how to stay productive longer.
Chocolate? No!
Eat something healthy instead. You only want that Bubbly and Wine Gums because your blood sugar drops a few hours after you eat – which is a normal human body thing. Refueling with luxuries after a Sweets from Heaven shopping spree might give you a little boost but only for a while. And then there’s that hard crash afterwards… Be afraid, be very afraid...
Rather: Act like the responsible adult that you are and opt for a fruit, raisins, almonds, a cup of herbal tea, or a wholewheat cracker with cheese,
Walk? Yes!
Sitting for long periods of time can lead to all sorts of health problems, not to mention fatigue. Make a point of getting up every now and then, whether it’s to go to the bathroom, chat about a work-related problem or go for a quick walk around your building.
Remember: The quick walk will give you just the boost of energy you need.
Industry news? Yes!
Perhaps you need a little change of scenery on your computer screen. If you’ve heard of the internet, this should be easy. Take some time out to catch up on industry-related trends and the latest news in your field. Then share interesting revelations with colleagues– it’ll inspire new ideas and help you to be seen as a valuable employee.
Good to know: Healthy social interaction can also do wonders for your team's spirit.
To-do list? Yes!
If you find that you really can’t concentrate even after trying all of the above, rather than being completely unproductive, try organising your tasks for the next day. Set up your to-do list, clear unnecessary emails, sort your existing emails, ensure all your work is backed up and organise your work folders.
Finally: If you really are finding it difficult to concentrate on work, don’t waste the last few hours of your time – organise your schedule to make sure your next day is more productive.
