3 ways to become a more effective boss

By focusing on these 3 important elements, you'll be that much closer to running a flawless operation.

When you’re the boss, it’s so easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the corporate world. Leadership fundamentals are often long forgotten (so far in fact that you’ve probably forgotten that they should’ve been remembered.) But take a step back: evaluate yourself, your actions and others’ perception of your technique. And like Christina Aguilera’s 2006 album, take it Back to Basics

Our keyword for the day is Operational Effectiveness.  Employing these 3 fundamentals can make your operation run more effectively and ultimately make you a better boss.

1.       Change Change Change

You should be open to new ways of getting the job done. The best bosses are adaptable, flexible, and they’re always tuned into to the latest in their industry and environment.  They’re always looking for opportunities.

It’s also part of your job to be a good listener.  Remember that the best ideas can come from employees on the floor – the ones closely involved with the actual work and processes. It’s true what they say; rigidity is the enemy of progress.

Not only should you NOT be afraid to shift the current operational model but you should actively seek opportunities that move away from the “this is the way it’s always been done” line of thinking.

2.       Excellence Excellence Excellence

The best bosses expect excellence from their employees. This is not to say that you should set unrealistic goals. Instead set high standards and invite staff to meet them. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not about being “tough” or “nice.” Rather focus on upping the standard of work produced and lead by example.

Your employees should know that you expect the best, and that you give your best. Self management is a key managerial skill. In time your staff will strive to emulate your example: if your employees know that you produce excellence yourself, they’ll be even more motivated to find it within themselves.

3.       Objectives Objectives Objectives

The best bosses ensure that their employees clearly know where they need to focus. If each person’s objectives are not well-conceived and measurable, you leave room for holes in efficiency. And excellence is still expected at each step. This also helps you manage employee performance objectively – they’ll undoubtedly know what is expected of them. You’ll also be able to pin-point exactly where they fall short if unsatisfactory work is being produced.

Use this as a guide throughout the year to maximise (here comes that keyword) operational effectiveness. If you tick all three boxes as well as the these three best boss boxes, you are definitely an amazing boss and deserve recognition.
