Michael knew, right from his early days at university where he completed his degree with Honours in Computer Science, Mathematics and Games Design, that he wanted to make games. The local industry is small and competitive though, but he got a foot in the door at a small games studio in Cape Town where he learnt the ins-and-outs of mobile games development. He shares that it was a steep learning curve, but a lot of fun.

However, as he learnt more about mobile development he became more and more interested in mobile app development, building and experimenting with social networking and messaging apps. This is what led to him taking on his current role, where he can develop at the forefront of an expanding industry.

Mobile developers are responsible for the processes and procedures involved in writing software for smart phones or tablets, including Android, Microsoft, Blackberry or Apple mobile apps, and mobile websites.

Michael tells us that the mobile platform is always evolving, so every year there is new hardware and new tools to learn and to play with: “I love how these changes keep me motivated to learn. That constant challenge means I’m never bored and future job roles can pop up overnight. When I look at my future in this industry, I feel like anything is possible.”

Michael advises others considering a career in mobile development to have a good understanding of software development. He suggests that while a computer science degree is great, a strong portfolio of awesome apps you have built will help you stand out from the crowd. He says “If you have any cool and crazy ideas you should go ahead and make them. Just build, build and build!”
