Virtual interviewing is becoming increasingly common in the workplace today. Here are a few quick tips to prep for a video interview.
These are a few basic interview tips that will ensure you make a success of your next video interview:
#1 Dress the part
Whether it’s a video or face-to-face interview, you have to look the part. Lots of people only dress smartly from the waist up – big mistake. If you move in your chair or shift away, you run the risk of showing the interviewer the truth – that you didn’t care enough to put in the effort.
#2 Ensure there are no distractions
Before you begin the interview, make sure that you cleaned the area around you and that there’s no distracting light. If you have pets, put them in another room or take them to the backyard before your interview, and if you live with anyone, tell them about your interview to ensure they don’t come barging in.
#3 Look at the camera
Do look at the camera and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Don’t look at the screen and check yourself out. It may be trickier to maintain eye contact during a video interview, but try your best.
#4 Speak clearly and directly
When you speak, you want the interviewer to hear you clearly and precisely because communication is key with any interview.
#5 Answer questions precisely and with detail
Sometimes, questions will be timed too, which is why it’s important to answer questions quickly, with as much detail as required. Practice makes perfect, so ask your friend to help you practice before your interview.
A video interview has some advantages, but in order to succeed, you have to use your common sense. If you go the extra mile for the interview, your chances of success are much higher than if you wait until the last second to decide on what to do.
