Dan started as a runner at an ad agency, but truly began his career after being invited to stay at the agency on a permanent basis. Dan has since changed industries and disciplines “a few times” and has also tried his own thing.

The role of creative director is a complex one, with expectations ranging from choosing the best ways to represent a company’s identity, to recruiting and managing the creative process involved in outsourced design, film or event firms.

Dan says “I love that I get to test out my ideas and help others try theirs out. The digital industry shifts so quickly we constantly have to adapt, and trying new things is a part of that.”
Creative Directors play an essential role in the marketing, creative, communications and digital departments of their agency. It's a people-oriented position and creative directors work with a number of professionals in different disciplines, from copywriters, graphic designers and web designers to account managers and brand managers on a daily basis.
There are a lot of meetings and plenty of travel too. A successful creative director must be great at juggling a lot of tasks at once.
Dan’s advice to aspiring Creative Directors is this: “I suppose I’d advise that anyone trying to get into this industry should study. I didn't, but I hear it's what all the kids are doing nowadays.”
