Your relationship with your boss could determine whether you stay or leave your job. Are you doing enough to earn their trust?
More often than not your relationship with your boss could determine whether you have a future at the company. Sometimes all you have to do to win your boss over is to do your job and do it well. However, problems will probably start to pop up when your boss begins to lose trust in you.
If you’re doing any of the below – stop! It’s a sure-fire way to lose your boss’ trust and be overlooked for future promotions.
You’re unreliable
The best employees meet their deadlines, show up on time and do what they say they’ll do. If you’re not doing those things your manager won’t trust you and chances are you won’t be considered for bigger projects or promotions. If you find that your deadlines were, in fact, unrealistic, simply communicate with your manager and inform him or her that you’ll need to change them.
You don’t keep everyone informed
Back to the previous point. If problems arise with a specific project, task or client, it is your duty to tell your manager - but remember to also offer solutions. It’s very important that you keep communication lines open, especially when things aren't going according to plan. Failing to do so will not only leave you with egg on your face but also cause your manager to lose trust in you.
You speak badly about your manager
If you have any complaints regarding your manager you should speak with him or her directly and in private – good managers will appreciate it. Don’t resort to being the office gossip. Spreading rumours has a way of coming out anyway and your manager won’t like that.
You don't take ownership
If you've made a mistake, own up to it. Don’t try to blame it on everyone else. A good manager will understand that you’re human and will make mistakes - in fact, your honesty will probably earn you extra brownie points. What’s really important is that you learn from them, take responsibility and do better next time.
You don’t voice your opinion when it matters
If you have extensive knowledge on a certain topic, especially one that could make or break your team’s project, it’s important to speak up. If the project fails and you later say that you knew it would for reason A, B and C, and your manager finds out, you’ll lose their trust. Why wouldn't you want your team to succeed?
