We break down some of the things you need to think about when choosing the company you want to work for.
If you’re thinking of moving from a small company to a large one, or the other way round, there are a few things you have to consider before you do so.
Relationships
At smaller companies there are more opportunities to clash with other personalities such as the fussy manager who believes in his way or the highway. And because smaller companies have fewer employees, a fall out with your manager or another employee could damage your reputation. It also becomes slighter more difficult to resolve disputes as your manager is often the only person you can turn to for support. At larger companies HR could step in and try to resolve any issues fairly, and legally.

You’ll be closer to the business
When working at a smaller company you know who you’re working for and share in the satisfaction of when the business is doing well. You knew what it took to get the profits up and you feel closer to the action. A downside of working at a smaller business is that you’re more likely to be affected by the economy, whereas larger companies are better able to take a few knocks.

You have more benefits
If you work at a large company, you have a better chance of receiving additional training, support or further career development. If you show that you’re a hard worker and you’re willing to go the extra mile, you might get promoted and have a better chance of increasing your earnings. Larger companies are also more likely to offer you benefits such as medical aid, discounts on insurance or attractive pension funds. A small employer might not have the means to offer you these things.
What’s the best choice?
Small businesses give you more control over your working environment as you tend to know your colleagues very well. If however you’re very ambitious and want to move up the corporate ladder, you might want to consider moving to a larger corporation, where there’s more room to grow.
