In celebrating women of strength during women’s month, Careers24 are featuring top women in the tech industry. Recently we had a chat with one of our closest team members, Tanya Slabbert. Tanya is a Solutions Architect for Careers24. She tells of how she came to choose to work in tech and shares some personal advice for aspiring women in tech.  

Tanya tells us, she has always showed an interest in problem solving. “I’ve always enjoyed problem solving so, as a high school student at the time, I decided to take Computer Programming as a subject. I then enrolled for my graduate studies at the Durban University of Technology and started my career as a junior developer,” Tanya says.

Tanya studied for her National Diploma in IT for a duration of 3 years. “I then completed a Bachelor of Technology in IT for 2 years,” she adds. Tanya also shared what she feels is the most satisfying part of her career. “For me, being part of evolving an idea into a software system that grows the business and enables us to employ more people is rewarding.”

Tanya’s advice for aspiring techies is as follows. “There are so many free online courses in software development available from universities and software companies. Also look out for internships and upskilling programs offered by IT companies.”
