According to the most recent National Scarce Skills list released by the Department of Labour, the unique talents of financially-minded professionals are rare and in demand in South Africa. Appearing among a list of 100 scarce skills are accountants, auditors, company secretaries and corporate treasurers, along with financial brokers and dealers, investment advisors, accounting clerks, bookkeepers and bankers.

While a career in finance certainly isn’t for everyone, hitching your chances of success to the finance wagon is generally a good move. Accountants and auditors appear on every list worth reading, from 24/7 Wall Street’s list of the 10 most promising jobs for the next 10 years to the hottest jobs right now.

Four years of study at one of South Africa’s better universities and another three or so years of practical training at a reputable firm will see you clear to a top job in finance. The average salary of a Chartered Accountant in South Africa is R434 191 per year.

A Finance Assistant earns from R62 800 to R185 974 per year, while a Finance Director can expect to earn between R554 046 and a whopping R1 508 618.
