Each boss is a different can of worms – if you’re lucky enough to work for someone who is a great listener, good communicator and a confident decision maker, you’ve struck the jackpot. For the rest of us, here is a list of various types of boss personalities – and how to best deal with them.  

1. The Commander

Traits: A risk-taker, drama queen (or king), bad communicator, very insightful, doubtful of others, creative

How to deal with them

If your boss is quick to doubt, be specific with your goals and leave no stone unturned – this type of boss needs detail. When talking about your plans, be sure to drop him or her a follow-up email with a detailed analogy of your plans and how you will implement them to avoid miscommunication.

2. The Egotistical Maniac

Traits: Self-involved, very critical of others, feedback is not welcomed; it’s their way or the highway kind of attitude, unsympathetic, highly motivated and driven to succeed

How to deal with them

Be one-step ahead of things – always anticipate problems and how to best deal with them. Communicating with your boss regularly is a good way to understand where they’re coming from and try to manage up as much as possible.

3. The "Who-doesn’t-like-him" boss

Traits: Very likeable, but can be inappropriate, indecisive, manages by “going with his gut”

How to deal with them
The indecisive boss can be a headache to deal with. Help your boss shine by making him realise that it’s okay to make a mistake and that making a decision is not as scary as it seems. When a big decision must be made, try taking the lead, but avoid making the final decision – rather let your boss have the last say. Logic will lead him or her in the right direction.  

4. The Domineering boss

Traits: Could be a little bit of a bully, presents themselves as large and in charge

How to deal with them
This type of boss wants to know that you appreciate how they never let problematic situation spiral out of control. Let your boss know that you would like to help find solutions when difficult situations arise.  

5. The Competitor

Traits: Loves and creates a competitive environment, sets high goals, very demanding of staff and is extremely driven.

How to deal with them
To get along with this type of boss, you need to understand what their idea of success is – where should you start, who has achieved what they’re demanding – get as many details as possible to gain insight.
