Working 9 to 5 is bound to impact your routines and habits to a degree. Here we share the habits that 24.com staffers have picked up in the course of their careers...

Working 9 to 5 is bound to impact your personality and habits to a degree. Some of these only impact you at work, while others may bleed into your home life too.

Have you ever caught yourself doing something work-like while not at work? If you’re a teacher, have you ever yelled “I’ll send you to the principal’s office!” at your own naughty kids? Or maybe after temping at a clothing store, you found yourself pulling clothes to the front of the racks in other stores too?

Whatever work environment you find yourself in, we’re sure you’ve adopted a few odd habits. Just like these 24.com journos, marketers and techies:

“I started eating with a spoon”

The office kitchen only stocks plastic cutlery. The knives and forks are very fragile, so it only makes sense to use the slightly stronger spoons to eat office lunches without struggling. Decent cutlery is a luxury in an office setting!

“I became more responsible”

The HR team gave everyone in the office a little plant and we all became plant ‘parents’. For this Marketing Designer, it was the most random thing in the world to suddenly be responsible for a plant.

“I started sighing. All the time.”

This 24.com staffer became aware that sounds were involuntarily leaving her body. We can imagine that sitting behind a desk all day with unlimited access to the internet could reveal plenty sigh-worthy information – including gasps, puffs, heaves, wheezes, gulps and coughs.

“I started carrying my jersey everywhere”

If you take a walk around the office floor after hours, you’ll notice that most chairs have a jacket or jersey over them. The aircon can make the office really chilly and even in summer it’s best to bring along something to keep you warm throughout the day. It seems that this Content Producer learnt to better prepare for temperature changes even when not coming to work.

“I started drinking coffee. A lot of it”

At R5 a cup from our own barista (24.com has an amazing company culture!) it’s no wonder every person is hooked on caffeine around here. Okay, not everyone but those we spoke to commented on how strange their friends and families took to their new drinking habits. From “My mum looked at me weird because I never drank coffee before” to “I have like at least 2 cups a day - sometimes 3 – and I was never a coffee person” and even “The coffee keeps you warm when the aircon does not!”
