Meet Raine Tauber, Global Senior Artist

If you're interested in a career in make-up, get some insight from Raine Tauber who is MAC Cosmetic's Global Senior Artist.

Raine is a Global Senior Artist for an international make-up company, and she gave us a glimpse into her work life so we could learn about the day-to-day role of a successful make-up artist.

Raine’s career journey is a story about being at the right place at the right time. “My mother was in the film/fashion industry and I used to assist her on set when I was a teenager.” Through assisting her mum, Raine met and connected with a few photographers. “One day a make-up artist called in sick, and a photographer called me to fill in as he was desperate. From then I knew this was what I wanted to do.” Raine now works for MAC Cosmetics, where she travels the world to transform people’s looks.

Global make-up artists are typically responsible for applying make-up and styling hair for people appearing in the entertainment industry, photo shoots, or live events like concerts, plays or fashion shows. They need to be able to create the look that the person needs for the type of production or event. This generally involves researching and designing make-up and hairstyles, working to a production designers' notes and instructions, using special effects make-up to completely change a person's look, waiting on set to re-do make-up and hair and removing make-up once shooting is over.

We asked Raine what she loves most about her career, and this is what she had to say: “The fact that I get to be creative every day and that I work for an amazing brand that values people.

Although Raine has a career in the cosmetics service industry, make-up artists may work in a variety of industries, including entertainment or fashion industry or they may choose to freelance. They can also work alone, as assistants to senior colleagues or as part of a make-up team.

For make-up artists working in the cosmetic service industry, a typical career path may start with working at the counter of a department store where duties include serving customers using a brand’s techniques, educating customers on products, techniques and skin care regimes, selling products, on counter coaching or mentoring and or administration activities.

Raine’s advice for those aspiring to be make-up artists is to study a make-up course. Cosmetology courses provide an aspiring make-up artist with the much needed industry knowledge while developing their creativity which is important for any successful make-up artist. Before approaching their company of interest, many artists also need to have gained some experience in order to showcase their talents during job interviews. In addition, a portfolio of their previous work is often mandatory in job interviews.
