Being exposed to operating systems and video games from an early age is solely the reason that Halatedzi pursued a career in mobile development. “I got my first video game console, an Atari, at 4 years old and by the age of 5 I was exposed to a computer which ran Windows 95.” Over the years, the idea of developing his own video game and PC applications led Halatedzi to pursue his studies in computer science. Halatedzi soon realised that a career in information technology offers more than just gaming development and entertainment. “With my skills I have realised that I can change the way people go about their day for the better, and what better way to do that than through their most personal asset, their mobile device?

Influenced by this realisation, Halatedzi decided to become an android developer.

Android developers are responsible for the development and maintenance of applications targeted at a range of diverse Android devices. Due to the diversity of these devices, android developers must be able to pay special attention to the compatibility of the applications that they develop. In addition, they need to have a thorough understanding of the patterns and practices that revolve around this platform.

Halatedzi tells us that he loves that his job gives me the opportunity to let his creativeness run wild. “I can think of ideas and bring them to life without limitations.” More than that, Halatedzi says that his work is easily accessible to the masses and that there is no better feeling than seeing something that he created being enjoyed by others. "[Also], the mobile space in South Africa is growing, so it’s an exciting career to be in,” he says.

For other aspiring IT professionals who would like to pursue an IT job, Halatedzi advises that you start off by learning and practicing every day to be good at mobile development. “Mobile development is not prioritised in tertiary institutions so you cannot depend on a computer science degree to acquire the skills,” Halatedzi says, adding that “Google is your best friend in this field.”

Second, Halatedzi suggests that the world of mobile development requires a great amount of patience as the initial learning curve is gruesome. “You need to be prepared to teach yourself the fundamentals of mobile development.”

Lastly, Halatedzi suggests that you find a hero in the industry that you can look up to and strive to be as good as they are. “At first, don’t be afraid to copy. Also focus on building a reputation by developing as many applications as possible.”
