Meet Gys Steyn, Creative Manager at Burger King

Creative Manager at Burger King

Introducing Gys Steyn, Creative Manager at Burger King South Africa. We recently interviewed this colourful personality and found out what makes creatives tick and delves a bit into his role. Gys also shared some gems of advice for those aspiring to a career in the creative industry.

How did you get into your line of work?

“Since I was a kid I was obsessed with photography. My mother bought me my first film point and shoot camera when I was about 9. Took photos of everything I could see. I took photos of food, which came out terrible, but I tried. As I got older I realised that my interests lay in photography and design which goes hand in hand. After trying my hand at studying some finance thing at the University of Stellenbosch I realised what I wanted to do: design and photography. To make things seen by others,” he says.

What was your field of study, and for how long was the course/degree?

“I studied Photography and Graphic Design for two years. Many believe that it is not something you can study. However, it crafts your skill and make you acknowledge the smaller details,” Gys tells us.

What do you love most about your career?

“Being creative. There is always room for creative growth. I get to ‘play’ with your ideas and see if they work.  With a brand like Burger King it is always possible to push the envelope just a little further each time.”

What advice do you have for someone trying to get into your line of work?

“Follow what you love wholeheartedly. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone will like your designs or your photographs. And like any other craft, practice makes perfect.”
