Craig comes from a digital strategist background, where he has been responsible for managing the digital strategy of a company. In this article, he tells us all about his career in broadcasting.

Craig is a Television Producer for the teen television show Hectic Nine-9 on SABC2, based in Observatory, Cape Town. Craig, who is very passionate about the media industry, was recently nominated as a rising star at the 2017 Rising Star Awards under the media and advertising category. We had the opportunity to learn more about Craig’s career in broadcasting.

After completing his honours degree at Rhodes University, Craig says that he worked as a floor manager and assistant director for the SABC1 sitcom Ga Re Du Mele, as well as Gauteng Maboneng. He then pursued a career in teaching in South Korea before returning to South Africa to continue with his career in film and media production.

“When I returned, I had the honour of writing children’s novels on South African history, and developed my video editing skills at a boutique post production house in Sandton. I then decided to cut my teeth at Okuhle Media as an Online Content Producer, merging my passion for film and digital media in an environment that continued to work with the youth,” Craig explains.

Craig now finds himself taking on more responsibilities in the television industry and taking his knowledge of film, television and digital media to head up the flagship project of Okuhle Media, Hectic Nine-9.

Craig comes from a digital strategist background, and was responsible for the successful management of a company’s digital strategy. Digital strategists need to be innovators, trendsetters and progressive thinkers who can connect digital marketing to all other aspects of a business to drive growth opportunities. They need to be able to answer important questions, including how brands are communicated and experienced through digital interactions, and how digital interactions can fit into broader customer experiences.

“What I love most about my career is that any given day is never the same,” Craig says. “There is always a new challenge, a new creative endeavour, or new side to digital marketing that I can explore.”

Craig has taken his knowledge of the #trending digital world to his role as the Producer of Hectic Nine-9. One of the best things about a career in the media industry is that it covers so many different aspects, from writing to producing to production, editing and special effects, he explains. “I enjoy being able to move from one area to the next in each project.

“Media production is the most artistic I know of, as it spans many different forms of art, and combines them into engaging projects,” he adds.

Craig says that he also enjoys being at the forefront of communication and having the ability to connect with a large variety of people. “I feel connected to the narrative of South Africa and the world in the feedback and responses I get from the public.”

How does one follow in Craig’s footsteps? He suggests taking advantage of every opportunity you get and making the most of it.

“I would also advise young people to start using the internet as a valuable research tool, where any skill you would like to know can be found and shared, usually for free,” he concludes.
