As a client services manager, Garron Heath needs interact with clients while surpervising his team. He tells us more about his role in customer services.

Garron works as both a medical technologist and a client services manager for Ampath Group. In this article, he told us more about his role in the company's client services department so we could learn about what it takes to become a successful client services manager.

Garron joined Ampath’s client services department 7 years ago, after a merger between his previous and current employer. “In 2011 the company I was working for was amalgamated into the Ampath Group. With the company merger came the opportunity to assist the management team to develop the client services department.  In so doing, my career as a client service manager in private pathology was born,” explains Garron.

Garron’s role means that he interacts with clients, in addition to directing and controlling the processing and fulfillment of orders. He also needs to supervise client services representatives.  “I enjoy inspiring and motivating my team members to be the best version of themselves that they can possibly become,” he says.

He also adds that “Finding new and innovative ways of achieving outcomes while working within the confines of the company’s directive is gratifying – working smarter rather than harder.

Lastly, Garron says working in an organisation that allows him to be creative is also highly rewarding. “I am inspired by a corporate culture that allows me to put imagination into what I do, giving me the freedom and support to invent new things that are unique to me,” he explains.

If you would like to become a client services manager in the private pathology environment, Garron emphasizes having a thorough understanding of the private pathology industry and how the laboratory system works. “Spending a few years working in the pre-analytical or analytical departments will help considerably,” he says.

He also suggests completing a supervisory or staff management certificate or diploma before entering the job market. And when you’re in that role, “always treat your staff with dignity and respect as your department’s performance will depend on your team’s efforts.
