Searching for that one accountant that will steer your company in the right direction? It might seem like a difficult task, but all you have to do is keep the traits we’ve listed below in mind.

No one wants to hire an accountant that’s below average. Every employer wants an accountant that is top notch – but how can you tell if they’re better than their competition? Take a look at the traits listed below to find out whether or not you've struck gold.

They’re team-oriented

Accountants were born to be part of a team, although they’re more than capable of doing individual work as well – they always have the team in mind. People in these professions want to help those around them and have also therefore become known as natural mentors. Accountants will always align their goals with that of the businesses – sound like someone in your team?

Accountants are deadline driven

Great accountants always meet their deadline even when things are a bit chaotic at work. They are able to multi-task and prioritise without compromising the quality and accuracy of their work.  Coupled with their strong attention to detail and ability to effectively collaborate with their team, accountants have an eye for solving their company’s problems efficiently to meet the required deadlines.

Do they have a history of success?

If you’re looking to hire an accountant you should have a look at their history of success. You can measure an accountant’s success by their commitment to always improve the company. Good accountants are never satisfied with the results; they’re always looking for ways to be and do better.

In an interview, it’s important to ask the candidate applying for an accountant job what they’ve personally contributed to a successful outcome. Listen carefully to the way they answer the question – do they mention “we” or “I”? If they mention “we” it indicates that they are a team player and that he or she is willing to share the successes. Dig a little deeper though until you find out what they were individually responsible for.

Are they ethical?

The good ones will never compromise on their personal or professional ethics. Great accountants believe in transparency and value a company that makes decisions based on strategic decisions. Are they committed to truthful and accurate reporting? Are they honest? Do they demonstrate ethical behaviour? These are all interview questions for accounts that will determine whether or not they will be good for the job.
