If you’re finding yourself in situations like these, you’ll need to take action, fast!

Have you ever been surprised by a disciplinary hearing? A retrenchment? A sudden request to leave the building, escorted by security?

Even if you haven’t, you’ll want to know what to look out for so you can prepare for the worst, or better yet, make a comeback and prevent a period of involuntary unemployment. If you’re finding yourself in situations like these described below, you’ll need to take action, fast!

1. You’re being excluded from meetings and are being left out of important get-togethers - events that you would normally attend. This could be a sign that the end is near. Take control by approaching the organisers and asking why you weren’t included. Show an interest in the meeting agendas and provide examples of how your particular skills can assist in future meetings.

2. Your level of responsibility is reduced and much of your work has been tasked to someone else. Save the day by meeting with your boss to describe how you can make the most of this extra time by taking on more responsibilities, and illustrate your point with examples of how you can help to make his job easier.

3. All communication between you and your boss is suddenly very formal. If your normally approachable manager now only sends emails and avoids you at the water cooler it could be a sign that something is up. Manage the situation by arranging a friendly chat with your superior. Mention your concerns and be open to receiving their feedback.
