Job seekers must stay on top of their game to successfully be placed in their desired role.

A guide for tech graduates to remain relevant in the job market.

Job seekers must stay on top of their game and remain relevant in the market if they want to successfully be placed in their desired job role. This is according to recruitment specialist, Tarryn Stringer from Nu-beginnings Career Specialists.

“Research the company, directors, managers and investors. Listen and listen well when undergoing the interview process,” Tarryn told us in a recent interview.

She also mentions that when candidates are faced with questions about salary and career goals it is always best to tell the truth. “Generally don’t ever lie, as any lie will catch up to you,” says Tarryn. See further articles on why not to lie on your CV here.

Nu beginnings is an IT company based in Century City, Cape Town which focuses predominately on placing developers, IT testers and system administrators in relevant roles. One element they pride themselves on is the fact that they go above and beyond to create meaningful and lasting relationships with their candidates.

“This is our difference, we make relationships more personal. We enjoy checking in and seeing how our candidates are doing,” adds Tarryn. As there is currently such high demand for developers Nu beginnings fosters ongoing relationships that will always take priority.

Tarryn also recommends to candidates who are generally battling to find work, it is best to constantly check the market. “Speak with HR managers on LinkedIn; they are online for the most part of the day. Also, don’t pay someone R500 to compile your CV, do your own research and Google for CV tips and compilations,” she says.

When asked how best to advise graduates, Tarryn says it is imperative they remain relative in the market. “Graduates must remember to interview the potential employer as much as they are being interviewed. Also, don’t submit your CV for application position that does not fit your profile. Focus on your strengths and credentials, and research the role to understand it before applying.” Tarryn adds.
