The best programming languages to learn right now

Find out which programming languages are the most in demand right now, and with which languages developers earn the highest salaries.

Every year, Stack Overflow surveys thousands of developers about their favourite “technologies, coding habits, and work preferences, as well as how they learn, share, and level up.

Their 2018 results showed that JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL and Java were the top five languages of the yea Bash/Shell, Python, C#, PHP and C++ round out the top ten.

 

1.       Javascript: An object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers.

Stack Overflow’s co-founder Jeff Atwood is famous for saying, among other things, “Any application that can be written in JavaScript will eventually be written in JavaScript.”

2.       HTML: Short for Hyper Text Markup Language, HTML is the standard markup language for creating Web pages. The code describes the structure of Web pages using markup. 

3.       CSS: Cascading Style Sheets describes how HTML elements are to be displayed and can control the layout of multiple web pages all at once.

4.       SQL: Short for Structured Query Language, SQL is a domain-specific language designed for managing data held in a relational database management system or for stream processing in a relational data stream management system.

5.       Java: Enables programmers to write instructions using English-based commands instead of numeric codes. It's known as a high-level language because it can be read and written easily by humans.
